Information for JME Evaluation participants

Welcome to a JME Evaluation! We hope the experience is fun for you. There are a few things you should know.

Before an Evaluation

Well over 1000 piano students participate in JME Evaluations every spring and fall! The JME Location Managers do a wonderful job of handling a lot of people (more than 200 entrants at some locations). But they need your help. So, please...

  • Don’t ask your teacher or the Location Manager to switch your time, and don’t switch your time with a brother, sister or friend who is being evaluated at a different time. Please take our word for it — you’ll really mess up the schedule!

  • Take your music with you to the Evaluation even if you have memorized your pieces. No photocopies, please, unless your teacher can provide you with written permission from the publisher (attach this to your photocopy).

  • You may use printed music downloaded from legitimate Internet sources, but you must provide a note from your parent or teacher verifying that the music was purchased legally.

  • Make sure you know where your Evaluation is being held. Arrive at least ten minutes before your scheduled time to register. NOTE: If you have participated before in a JME Evaluation, don’t assume you are playing at the same location this time!

  • If you aren’t on time, you’ll really mess up the schedule. With so many people participating, we won’t be able to “fit you in” if you’re either late or early.

If you’re unable to participate

If you become ill or if there is a serious family emergency and you cannot participate, tell your own piano teacher within a week after the Evaluation. JME will give you a credit toward participating in the next JME Evaluation.

Sorry, JME cannot issue credits for any other reasons.

Location maps

Make sure your teacher gives you the location for this Evaluation (it may be different from one you visited previously). Then click below for a map showing that location.

Note: These are high-resolution PDF files suitable for printing. They will open in a separate window. After you are finished viewing and/or printing the map, return to this page by closing that window.

At the Evaluation

Try to relax — just do the best you can.

  • The judge, who is a teacher like your own, will have you play your piece(s), ask you to sight read some music (it will be easier than what you’re playing now) and ask you a few questions.

  • Your evaluation should take about 15 minutes.

  • The judge will fill out an Evaluation Form and give it to a JME Associate.

  • The Location Manager (or a JME Associate) will give you your certificate, a ribbon and a copy of the judge’s Evaluation Form.

To receive a trophy or other award, attend the Award Ceremony (see “Events”).
